SPR 195 is a prerequisite for all other courses. The order of other courses will be based on the student's needs and permission from the instructor. Advanced standing for courses may be granted by the instructor.
The courses will be completed by the student at home or the workplace. Each course includes a student study guide which consists of instructional text and assignments. The student will have access to an instructor by phone, e-mail or through web pages on the internet. Assignments can be sent by mail, fax or e-mail. Instructor/student interaction is encouraged throughout the program. Tests can be written at the student's workplace or other suitable locations as agreed upon by the instructor and the student.
Minimum computer hardware requirements are expected for the computer courses. An interactive video CD ROM is included in the CAD 295 course. The software used for the Sprinkler Design Course will depend on what software the student has access to at the workplace or at home.
Students are required to purchase the required NFPA documents.
The student / teacher ratio will kept low to ensure that the instructor will be available to answer questions on a regular basis. After the student registers, they will be contacted by the instructor to discuss how the course is conducted.
Course Synopsis
Introduction to Sprinklers (SPR 195)
This course will provide the student with a basic understanding of the requirements which apply to the general design, installation and approval of automatic sprinkler systems. The course will include the use and interpretation of NFPA 13. The required textbooks are:
NFPA 13 - Standard for the Installation of Sprinkler Systems (Most Current Edition)
Student Study Guide for SPR195 by Joseph Curry (Seneca College)
Sprinklers II (SPR 490)
This course is a continuation of Introduction to Sprinklers. Topics covered will include wet and dry system operation, residential systems, high piled storage, rack storage and stand pipe systems.
The required textbooks are:
Student Study Guide for SPR490 by Joseph Curry (Seneca College)
NFPA 13 (Most Current Edition)
NFPA 14 (Most Current Edition)
NFPA 13D (Most Current Edition)
Introduction to AutoCAD (CAD 295)
This course will introduce the student to AutoCAD. Students will learn the basic operations of the software including installation, navigating the editing screen, setting up a drawing, drawing various entities, using object snaps, editing objects, file management, layer control, using coordinates, dimensioning and plotting drawings.
Students are required to have access to a computer with Internet access and an e-mail account. The student package will include a study guide and an interactive CD-ROM. Students must have AutoCAD or purchase a student version.
The required textbooks are:
Student Study Guide for CAD 295 by Joseph Curry (Seneca College)
Fluid Mechanics and Hydraulic Calculations (HDS 395)
The student will be introduced to fluid mechanics with emphasis on fluid statics, fluid flow and Bernoulli's equation. The second part of the course will introduce sprinkler hydraulics, and system calculations.
The required textbooks are:
Student Study Guide for HDS 395 by Joseph Curry (Seneca College)
Sprinkler Design (CSD 595h, or CSD 595s)
The student will be required to work through one of three study guides depending on the software that the student has access to. The three options are:
HydraCAD (CSD 595h)
SprinkCAD Pro (CSD 595s)
The student must have access to the software before beginning the course. Final drawings can be sent by mail or e-mail for marking. A study guide is available for each of the software packages. The student will work through only one of these outlines. The required textbooks are:
Student Study Guide for CSD 595 by Joseph Curry (Seneca College)
NFPA 13 (Most Current Edition)
Fire Pumps (FIP 593)
This course is a continuation of HDS 395. Students will investigate positive displacement and centrifugal pumps as they are used in fire protection. Pump components, ancillary devices, electric motors, diesel engines, controllers, fittings and valves will be covered. Students will reference NFPA 20 and NFPA 25 regarding installation, acceptance, maintenance and testing. Fire pumps will be included in hydraulic calculations. The required textbooks are:
Student Study Guide for FIP 593 by Joseph Curry (Seneca College)
NFPA 25 (Most Current Edition)
NFPA 20 (Most Current Edition)
Stocklisting (STK 595)
The student will be introduced to the basics of stocklisting. Where and how stocklists are produced will be covered. Stocklists will be produced entirely by hand and through the use of computer programs. The student may use the stocklisting package that they have at work. If the student does not have a stocklisting computer package, one will be provided for them. The required textbooks are:
Student Study Guide for STK 595 by Joseph Curry (Seneca College)
